The History of Italy national football team
When it comes to the top football countries in the world, one can definitely think of Italy. Known as the Azzurri, Italy has four World Cup winners, tied with Germany and second only to Brazil (five). They also won the Olympic Football Championship in 1936 and the European Championship in 1968.
♡ Origins
Italy organised their first official match against France shortly after their establishment, and they won 6-2 with Pietro Lana scoring the first goal of the game. The following year, they changed the colour to blue, inspired by the Savoy royal coat of arms on the flag.
In 1934, Italy hosted the World Cup, which was also their first competition. The team is led by the legendary Giuseppe Meazza, arguably the greatest Italian player of all time. Italy beat Spain 1-0 after beating the United States 7-1. They then beat Austria 1-0 in the semifinals and Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final. Yes! They won the World Cup on their debut.
The Italian squad at the 1938 World Cup was stronger than the first, thanks to the addition of the talented young striker Silvio Piola. And it turned out to be the case: Italy beat Norway, France, Brazil and Hungary to win the World Cup for the second time in a row.The World Cup has been suspended for a long time because of the abominable World War II. However, Italy suffered a terrible disaster. Fans should know that the entire Turin football team was killed in the Superga crash a year before the official national game resumed, and because Turin players are the key to the national team.
♡ Recent History
After several downturns, the Italian Football Federation has appointed Marcello Lippi as its new head coach. Although his first game in charge ended in defeat, he still managed to secure a place at the 2006 World Cup. And Italy won on penalties to claim its fourth World Cup title.
At Euro 2008 and 2014, the Azzurri reached the quarter-finals. Sadly, both were eliminated by penalty kicks. In 2021, Italy will win the European Championship for the second time. Italy's team also finished as runners-up in the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2022, and the third place at 2023 UEFA Nations League.
